KUALA LUMPUR: National triple jumper, Muhammad Hakimi Ismail and pole vaulter, Mohd Iskandar Alwi put up sterling performances to rake in gold medals at the 2018 Malaysia Open Athletics Championship at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tonight.

The three-day champion which began yesterday saw Muhammad Hakimi representing the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) recording 16.01m in the triple jump for gold and defeated Khaled Alsubaie of Kuwait (15.70m) who won the silver. The bronze medal went to Perak’s Lau Jit Sung (14.78m).

For Muhammad Hakim who is also a Podium Programme participant, the meet is a platform to try out a jump technic experiment in preparation for the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang in August.

“I am happy with the results as what I wanted to try out here was met,” he told reporters here last night.

Meanwhile, Mohd Iskandar who cracked the national pole vault record after clearing 5.31m in March, won gold with a height of 5.00m.

The silver medal went to Kuwait’s Al Mershad Fahad with 4.90m while Muhammad Afiq Ahmad Alham of Johor took the bronze medal after clearing 4.80m.

In shot put, 2016 Rio Paralympics gold medalist Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli won bronze with a throw of 15.68m.

The gold medal went to Musab Ibrahim Mohammad Momani of Jordan with 17.07m while Ebrahim Alfadhli won silver (17.06m).
