THE death of a young schoolgirl (M. Vasanthapiriya) has shaken many of us. Words fail to express our pain, while many cannot comprehend the depth of the anguish of her parents, relatives and friends. And yet, in some way, all of us share their hurt. That such a gentle soul should resort to taking her own life speaks of our collective failure.
While we work through our grief and anger, we also need to harness these emotions for constructive change. We need to put in place support systems for children and adolescents; a safety net for the young and sensitive ones who are under so much pressure these days.
Education is about nurturing, understanding and encouraging. Teachers play a big role in children’s education and should be sensitive to their opinions.
We ask that Vasanthapiriya’s death be not in vain.
