TEMERLOH: Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is not an example of a great leader as he is driven only by self-interest.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin said Muhyiddin's continued criticism of the party despite having left the party more than a year ago clearly revealed his desperation for support.
"It was Muhyiddin's decision and choice to leave Umno. If he is 'anak jantan' (man enough) and wanted to topple Umno's leadership, he should have tried it when he was still with Umno.
"In reality, he should respect the institution of Umno. He used to be part of the (party's) Supreme Council and could have raised (the matter) during the meeting.
"I regard him as a leader who was disappointed. Muhyiddin can continue with his claims, but I believe that he is weak and not great in politics," said Sharkar, who is also Temerloh Umno chief.
Muhyiddin, who used to be Umno deputy president, is now Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president.
Sharkar was speaking to the media after the Majlis Walimatul Urus Perdana organised by the Temerloh Women, Family and Community Development Council at Dataran Temerloh today.
Also present were Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Pahang Wanita Umno chief Senator Datuk Roslin Abdul Rahman, and state Women and Family Development, Communications and Multimedia Committee chairman Datuk Shahaniza Shamsuddin.
Around 16 couples took part in the event, which is the first ever to be held in the district.
The couples were chosen by the district Women, Family and Community Development Council with the cooperation of the district Islamic Religious Department and Temerloh Umno Division.
