ALOR STAR: Kedah Pas is planning to include public caning of shariah offenders into its manifesto for the 14th General Election (GE14), its state commissioner Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Syeikh Fakhrurazi said today.
However, the decision, whether it is appropriate to do so in the state, will be deliberated by the party's manifesto committee.
"The committee will look into several issues in deciding on the matter, including whether it is appropriate (to be implemented) based on the reality of the communities in Kedah.
"The approval is also subjected to the consent from Pas national leadership," he told a press conference after attending Pas Aidilfitri open house at its state headquarters in Kota Sarang Semut here today.
Ahmad Fakhruddin was commenting on the Kelantan government's plan to introduce public caning of shariah offenders.
On Wednesday, the Kelantan state assembly passed an amendment to the Shariah Criminal Procedure Enactment 2002, which calls for Shariah offenders to be caned in public for the offences of zina (adultery), false accusations of zina, sodomy and alcohol consumption.
The Sabah Shariah court was the first in the country to carry out public canings in the country, but they were limited to the court’s compound.
It was reported that its state Shariah chief judge Datuk Jasri @ Nasip Matjakir as saying that two public canings had been conducted at prisons in Sabah in 2011 or 2012 while the recent public canings was carried out in the Tawau Shariah court last year.
