ALOR STAR: The Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) has distributed cash aid to some 72 paddy farmers whose crops were destroyed during floods last year.
The farmers from Kampung Lemping, Kampung Kubang Pangas and Kampung Kelonchor received a total of RM94,582 from Mada chairman Datuk Othman Aziz.
Othman said mada hoped that the cash aid would help to ease the farmers’ burden following the June floods.
“The flood occurred due to the on-going floods mitigation project, which is being carried out along Sungai Kedah and Sungai Anak Bukit.
“Most of the affected farmers had just started their paddy planting process and following the floods, they had to start all over again,” he told reporters.
He said each of the farmers receive between RM400 and RM6,000 based on the size of their paddy field.
Meanwhile, Jasman Mat Noor, 45, from Kampung Lemping said the money came as a blessing since Hari Raya is just around the corner.
“We had to fork out extra money to cover the replanting cost which was about RM2,000 per acre,” he told reporters at a break fast session with Kedah media representatives yesterday.
Meanwhile one of the farmers Ismail Osman, 63, from Kampung Kubang Pangas, said last year’s flood was the first that he experienced since he started farming 50 years ago.
“I am toiling on a 1.21 hectare of paddy plot and during the flood incident the paddy seedlings were about few weeks old.
“I had to repeat the whole process again because the seedlings were badly damaged and I am grateful for this cash aid,” he said.
Ismail said the money would be used for Aidilfitri celebrations which will take place at the end of this week.
