KOTA KINABALU: An 18-year-old illegal immigrant was sentenced by the Sessions Court today to eight years' jail and 10 strokes for drug possession.

Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence to Al-Kamal Al-Baris who had pleaded guilty on March 28 to the charge under Section 39A (2)(r) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 (Act 234).

A single mother Lisa Hasan, 39, also an illegal immigrant, who was jointly charged with Al-Kamal, was also sentenced to eight years' jail.

Both of them were found on May 31 last year with 38.49 gramme of methamphetamine in their possession at Tokong Cina Lumat in Beaufort.

Both were unrepresented.

Deputy public prosecutor Husna Abdul Halim prosecuted.

Al-Kamal who has never been to school pleaded for a light sentence.

Azreena ordered Al-Kamal and Lisa to serve their sentence from the date of arrest.

They will later be referred to Immigration Department for deportation.
