BALIK PULAU: Penang police smashed a ketum juice trafficking syndicate with the arrests of six men and the seizure of 500 litres of ketum juice packed in 1,660 plastic packets during two separate raids here on Wednesday.

In the first raid on a house in Sungai Ara at 10.40am, police nabbed one man and discovered 20 packets of ketum juice, along with the utensils used in its preparation.

About three hours later, the suspect led police to a second house at Kampung Seronok, where five men were detained and the remaining 1,640 packets of ketum juice were found.

“The (total haul) is estimated to be worth RM13,000, with each packet sold for about RM30.

"We believe (the ketum juice) was meant for the local market, (comprising) fishermen and factory workers in the area," Southwest district police chief Superintendent A. Anbalagan said during a press conference here today.

The six men, aged 23 to 55, have been remanded until April 14 for further investigation.

Three of the suspects have criminal records of drug-related offences, while one is on the police’s wanted list. A fifth man was once detained under the Poisons Act.

The case is being investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952.
