GEORGE TOWN: Two men were detained by marine police for attempting to distribute firecrackers, fireworks and contraband cigarettes worth RM40,520 in Butterworth yesterday.

In the 4.30pm raid, codenamed Ops Landai, the duo, aged 21 and 54, were detained at a sundry shop - the base of their operation - by a team from the Northern Region Marine Police (Region 1).

Its commander Assistant Commissioner Rosman Ismail said checks inside the premises found boxes and packages containing an assortment of firecrackers, fireworks and contraband cigarettes.

He said the same items were also hidden in three boxes inside a car outside the sundry shop.

"Checks showed the firecrackers, fireworks and contraband cigarettes kept inside the sundry shop and car did not have authorisation letter for storage or sale by the police.

"The total amount of firecrackers and fireworks seized were RM25,520 and contraband cigarettes worth RM15,000. We also seized three cars worth RM90,000. Altogether, the amount seized were RM130,520," he told a press conference here today.

Rosman said the police did not rule out that the two suspects may have connection with the firecrackers and contraband cigarettes network in the state.

"Both suspects have been remanded for four days to assist in investigation," he said.

The case is indestigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
