ALOR STAR: A suspected drug trafficker was killed during a shootout with the police near Kampung Weng in Baling yesterday.

Kedah police chief Datuk Asri Yusof said in the 4.45am incident, a team from the Criminal Investigation Department spotted a Toyota Vios pulled over near a junction in Kampung Weng.

“They approached the car when they saw a man in the driver’s seat; they ordered him to step out of the car.

“The man suddenly opened fire from inside the car and continued to shoot at the policemen after he stepped out of the car,” he told reporters in a press conference this afternoon.

He said the policemen were forced to return fire in self-defence and the man was hit twice, once on the chest and the other, his head.

Asri said upon inspecting the car, police found a semi-automatic Norinco pistol with a magazine, eight packets of substance believed to be heroin weighing about 40g, two sets of fake car plates.

“Following the incident, a team from the Perak police contingent raided the man’s house in Kampung Selarong, Pengkalan Hulu yesterday and seized a homemade bomb, several type of bullets and 250g of syabu,” he said.

He said a woman has been remanded by Perak police to help with their investigation.

He said the man had past record of house break-in and extortion.
