KUALA TERENGGANU: Police have arrested 28 people, aged 25 to 35, for selling and distributing illegal firecrackers throughout the state.
State police chief Datuk Aidi Ismail said the arrests were part of operations held from May 27 to last Wednesday.
The suspects have been remanded to facilitate probes under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, and face a fine or a jail sentence, or both, upon conviction.
"Our men managed to nab eight people in Marang, Kuala Terengganu (three), Dungun (three), Kemaman (two) and a man each in Besut and Hulu Terengganu," he said today.
Aidi said the 28 cases led to the seizure of various types of illegal firecrackers worth RM65,300. The fireworks include Ball firecrackers, Happy Boom, Jet 69-10, Happy Boom KK189, Magic Boom KK002, Disco Flash P5008, Fatt Chay Hung Crackers, Happy Boom Fire Rose and Happy Boom Whistlemoon Traveller.
"Kuala Terengganu led the districts with the highest haul, with ten cases involving the seizure of RM33,900 worth of firecrackers, followed by Marang (eight cases with a haul worth RM10,200) and Besut with a case involving RM10,000," he said.
Aidil said the seizure in Dungun is worth RM5,000, Kemaman RM3,300 and Hulu Terengganu RM2,900.
"The raids, which were triggered by tip-offs and police surveillance, were held at stores, houses, business premises, as well as Ramadan bazaars," he added.
