SHAH ALAM: Police have seized firecrackers worth RM8,000 and arrested two individuals selling the banned items in a four-hour raid here on Friday night.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat today said a 44-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were detained in Section 15 and Section 8 respectively.

"They were subsequently remanded for a day to be investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957. We believe they are part of a larger network selling these illegal fireworks and we are probing deeper.

"The Inspector-General of Police have said that only Pop Pop and Happy Boom are allowed to be sold. Those wanting to sell the items need to obtain a permit and I have issued 80 so far.

"So, I know how many licences have been given out. Those found to have flouted the terms by selling prohibited fireworks will have their licence revoked," he said.

Shafien said the raid, which started at 9pm, was conducted following complaints from the public.
