KUALA LUMPUR: National top men’s doubles pair, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong failed to continue their winning ways after suffering a shock defeat at the India Open Super Series Badminton Tournament held at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, India today.
The 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist who are also the top seeds in the tournament, lost in straight sets 15-21 and 17-21 to the fifth seed, Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen of China in the quarterfinals match, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website;www.bwfbadminton.org.
The lanky Chinese pair who emerged as runner-up at the 2017 All England, last month will square-off against the sixth seeded pair, Ricky Karandasuwardi/Angga Pratama in the semifinals match, tomorrow after the Indonesian pair edged Lee Jhe-Huei/Lee Yang of Taiwan; 22-20 and 25-23.
National top mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying will face South Korean pair of Kim Gi Jung/Shin Seung Chan in the quarterfinals match, later today.
Malaysia did not send any representative in three other events- men’s singles, women’s singles and also doubles– in the US$325,000 (RM1.436 million) tournament.
