Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd has launched its new 2017 Honda Jazz facelift with a starting price of RM74,800 inclusive of insurance and six per cent GST.

Available in two versions and a total of four variants, the Jazz facelift comes in petrol or Sport Hybrid version. The Honda Jazz Petrol version offers three variants, the S, E and V, while the Sport Hybrid comes in only one variant.

Malaysia is the only country outside of Japan to introduce the new Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual-Clutch Drive (i-DCD) system which is available in the new Jazz Sport Hybrid.

“The new Jazz Hybrid is the only sport hybrid in Malaysia that is priced below RM90,000 and it is expected to be delivered to customers end of July 2017 onwards.

“The decision to launch the Sport Hybrid i-DCD in Malaysia is very much in line with Malaysian government’s aspiration to promote Energy Efficient vehicles (EEV),” said its managing director and chief executive officer Katsuto Hayashi during a press conference after the launch ceremony.

Honda Malaysia achieved a milestone back in the year 2004 being the pioneer automotive company to introduce hybrid technology to Malaysians and another milestone was unlocked upon becoming the first manufacturer in Malaysia and third country after Japan and the United States of America to produce hybrid vehicles locally in the year 2012.

“Being the pioneer to introduce hybrid technology in Malaysia back in 2004 and the first manufacturer to produce hybrid vehicles locally in 2012, we are committed to producing a good line-up to drive fuel-efficient vehicles as part of our support towards the government’s direction and initiatives for the automotive industry,” Hayashi said.

The new Jazz Sport Hybrid will be equipped with the new 1.5-litre double overhead cam i-VTEC four-cylinder engine mated to a 7-speed i-DCD transmission, to promote excellent acceleration for a sportier driving experience. It is capable of producing 108.5 hp and 134 Nm of torque. The engine is also paired with a lithium-ion battery and a built-in electric motor that offers 29 hp and 160 Nm of torque.

Honda Malaysia claims that the lithium-ion battery is 50 per cent more powerful compared to its predecessor and smaller in size. In Sport-mode, with a press of the “S” button, the Sport Hybrid i-DCD provides maximum combined output of the engine and electric motor of up to 135hp. It is equivalent to a 1.8-litre engine. However, it consumes just 4 litres of petrol per 100km and can be driven on full electric vehicle (EV) mode.

The Honda Jazz Sport Hybrid comes with electric power steering, shift by wire gear, 3D speed meter design multi-information display, and cruise control. The rest of the equipment lists are almost the same as the new Jazz Petrol version’s E variant.

Meanwhile, the Honda Jazz Petrol version comes with the 1.5-litre single over head cam i-VTEC four-cylinder engine mated to an Earth Dreams continuously variable transmission that produces 118hp at 6,600rpm and 145 Nm of torque from 4,600rpm.

All variants will come with the new chrome front grille, new front and rear bumper design, push start button with smart entry, and ECON button. Other enhancements include 16-inch dual tone colour alloy wheels, half-leather and fabric seats, paddle shift and cruise control for the V variant. The E, Sport Hybrid and V variants get the LED daytime running lights, 6.8-inch display audio and multi-angle reverse camera.

Similar to the E and Sport Hybrid, the S variant comes with the 15-inch allow wheels, instead of the steel wheels with wheel caps that was installed previously. The S variant also comes with push start button with smart entry, a standard audio non touchscreen head unit, and 9 cup holders, while the V, E and Sport Hybrid variants only get 7 cup holders.

Developed under Honda’s “Man Maximum, Machine Minimum” principle, the new Jazz retains its iconic Ultra seats with four modes - Utility, Long, Tall and Refresh to maximise the space for the driver, passengers and the goods they carry.

The multi-configuration modes of the seats allow the car to be configured for all occasions, be it short or long distance driving. The Ultra seats is a feature that is unique to the Jazz only and even with the Intelligent Power Unit placement underneath the cargo space of the new Jazz Sport Hybrid, the Ultra seats arrangement can still be maintained.

As for safety aspects of the facelifted Honda Jazz, all variants come with anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, rear sensors, rear Isofix child seat points and security alarm with immobiliser. However, the S variant gets two airbags, while the E and Sport Hybrid gets four airbags and the top V grade gets six airbags.

Apart from the equipment mentioned above, the V, E and Sport Hybrid variants has additions such as vehicle stability assist, hill start assist and emergency stop signal functions to add to it.

Hayashi added that Honda Malaysia’s local research and development team spent two years to make sure the new Jazz is suitable for Malaysian road conditions.

“We tested and run this model in the past 2 years over more than 7,000km on Malaysian road. The new Jazz Sport Hybid was tested on different road conditions such as heavy traffic, windy roads and uphill slopes. It has enabled us to perfect the vehicle and cater the new Jazz Sport Hybrid to suit Malaysian road conditions and driving style,” said Hayashi.

The new Jazz Petrol comes in five colours - Modern Steel Metallic, Lunar Silver Metallic, Carnival Red, Taffeta White and Crytal Black Pearl. Whereas there are three colours available for the new Jazz Sport Hybrid - Lunar Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic and the exclusive White Orchid Pearl, which is only available for the new Jazz Sport Hybrid for a RM300 premium.

The S variant is priced from RM74,800, while the E variant is made available at RM81,000. The top V variant is sold at RM88,400, while the Sport Hybrid retails at RM87,500. Prices above includes insurance and six per cent goods and services tax.

Both the new Jazz Petrol and new Jazz Sport Hybrid comes with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty at 10,000km service intervals. As for the new Jazz Sport Hybrid, it comes with 8 years warranty for its lithium-ion battery on top of the standard warranty.

There are also optional Mugen accessory packages to enhance the stylish outlook of the new Honda Jazz. The Mugen package which consists of the front and rear under spoiler, side skirts, Mugen grille emblem and tailgate spoiler is available at RM5,670. The Urban package which comes with door visor, illuminated side step, foot light and sports pedal is sold at RM1,580.
