KUALA LUMPUR: Doctors and medical practitioners were disappointed that their phone calls to the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) went unanswered.

MMC is a body which registers qualified doctors and where health practitioners can seek help on medical topics.

Some of them claimed that they could not get through to MMC even when using the telephone number found on the council’s website.

Checks on the website showed that unanswered calls were a long-standing problem as most visitors to the MMC portal left comments venting their frustration over the lack of communication.   

Attempts by Actionline to contact MMC using the contact number on the council’s website also proved futile.

Some of the doctors also claimed that they were told off by MMC officers because they did not make an appointment before going to the council’s office for registration.

MMC secretary Datuk Dr Azmi Shapie said the council was aware of the matter and was taking steps to overcome the situation.

Dr Azmi said MMC was handling many calls per day which, in turn, made the waiting time longer than expected.

He said the council was aware of the volume of calls per day, but had been receiving more than it could accommodate.

“We have been receiving more calls than our operators can manage a day.

“The standard operating procedure is to have the callers note which departments they want to reach, so the operators can redirect them to the relevant officers.

“This is to reduce waiting time.”

Dr Azmi said those who wished to set up an appointment or had general enquiries could visit the MMC website at www.mmc.gov.my.
