Residents in Jalan SS 5D/1 to SS 5D/5, Kelana Jaya, are distressed over the congestion caused by hawkers operating along the main road in Jalan SS 5/2.
A resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the problem had existed for years despite numerous complaints being sent to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).
“More hawkers have set up stalls recently. Residents are irked because patrons parked haphazardly by the roadside. Some hawkers also operated during the peak hours in the afternoon.
“One hawker has even built a concrete structure on the road shoulder.
“There are also security concerns as the stalls could attract criminals.”
He said residents were worried that the food business might attract pests and create garbage disposal problems.
“We hope MBPJ will relocate these hawkers to a more suitable place.”
The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) public relations officer said the council would take action against hawkers or food stall operators who failed to adhere to its regulations.
He said the hawkers were given only four hours to operate their stalls daily.
“These food stall operators have been issued temporary licences by the council and only five are allowed to operate their business in the area.
“We will conduct checks. If we find anyone flouting the rules, we will report it to our enforcement department. The food stall operators’ temporary licences may be revoked.
“We have also received complaints that some hawkers are operating illegally in the area. We will take action against them, too.”
